U.S. customs agents intercepted a shipment of fake Nike shoes that were found hidden behind cartons of toilet paper in a container that purportedly was carrying kitchen cabinets, authorities said today.

The shipment came from China, by way of Hong Kong, to the Port of Oakland last Friday. The importer submitted documents to U.S. Customs and Border Protection that described the contents as $20,674 worth of kitchen cabinets.

But when customs agents took a closer look, they found 568 cartons of counterfeit Nike footwear worth an estimated $704,000, hidden behind 30 cartons of industrial toilet paper, authorities said.

Federal prosecutors are stepping up the pressure on suspects accused of trafficking in counterfeit merchandise, including fake bags, jewelry, watches and clothing.

Ten people, including four Bay Area residents, were indicted by a federal grand jury in Sacramento on Thursday. Other suspects have been indicted in the Bay Area for trafficking in counterfeit goods at local flea markets.

If that wasn’t enough. Here’s another article.

LONG BEACH - Federal agents seized 18,560 pairs of counterfeit Nike shoes sent from China to the Port of Long Beach in two shipping containers, which were falsely marked as drainage pipeline fittings, authorities said Wednesday.

The items were confiscated Monday when the containers were inspected by U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel, said Mike Fleming of the federal agency.

Agents also seized 252 pairs of other shoes that were placed in front of the counterfeits to try to conceal them, Fleming said.

The appraised value of the seized items - which will be destroyed - was $521,000, Fleming said.

“Had the shoes been legitimate, the value would have been $2.6 million,” he said.
